During his tenure as CEO, from to , Jack Brennan emphasized what he calls the virtuous circle of attracting loyal clients who stick around and create new ones through word of mouth. Brennan spoke with HBR about why companies should want to tell investors more about their customers—and how soon they may be required to. Edited excerpts follow.
Brennan: In our business, the highest-cost thing we do is attract and onboard new clients. Across businesses in general, this is still underexposed and undervalued as a concept. How are you acquiring customers? How are you losing them? Which ones are profitable? A debate is currently going on about whether investors who are buying not an entire company but, say, 1, shares should have access to some of the same information about the core value of the customer base that private-market investors see in their due diligence process.
I think they should. One portfolio manager I know runs a very concentrated fund—it holds eight to 10 stocks at a time, with essentially zero turnover.

The latter, often abbreviated as The Wealth of Nations , is considered his magnum opus and the first modern work of economics. In his work, Adam Smith introduced his theory of absolute advantage. Smith studied social philosophy at the University of Glasgow and at Balliol College , Oxford , where he was one of the first students to benefit from scholarships set up by fellow Scot John Snell. After graduating, he delivered a successful series of public lectures at the University of Edinburgh , leading him to collaborate with David Hume during the Scottish Enlightenment.
Smith obtained a professorship at Glasgow, teaching moral philosophy and during this time, wrote and published The Theory of Moral Sentiments. In his later life, he took a tutoring position that allowed him to travel throughout Europe, where he met other intellectual leaders of his day. Smith laid the foundations of classical free market economic theory. The Wealth of Nations was a precursor to the modern academic discipline of economics. In this and other works, he developed the concept of division of labour and expounded upon how rational self-interest and competition can lead to economic prosperity.
Smith was controversial in his own day and his general approach and writing style were often satirised by writers such as Horace Walpole. Smith was born in Kirkcaldy , in Fife , Scotland. His father, also Adam Smith, was a Scottish Writer to the Signet senior solicitor , advocate and prosecutor judge advocate and also served as comptroller of the customs in Kirkcaldy. Two months before Smith was born, his father died, leaving his mother a widow.

From divorce rates to the ‘man shortage’, there’s little about love that can’t be explained by market values, according to one economist. She explains her theories to Gillian Orr. Four years ago, Marina Adshade, an economics professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, struck upon an ingenious idea to get her students more excited about learning economics: she would use familiar subjects such as sex and love to teach them.
In fact, Adshade argues that almost every option, every decision and every outcome in matters of sex and love is better understood by thinking within an economic framework; the supply and demand of our intimate needs, if you will. Adshade proves, through a number of global studies, that our decisions in matters of sexual relationships are made with a firm grasp of economics, whether we realise it or not.
Adshade acknowledges that the economic theories are not intended to describe the behaviour of everybody in society but, statistically, the behaviour of people on average. And none of the evidence in the book comes from public opinion polls; everything is based on choices individuals actually make, not the choices they say they would make when given options. Dirty Money has no interest in discussing right or wrong behaviour; Adshade focuses solely on how people actually behave as opposed to how they should behave.
We tend to have the perception that teenagers are more sexually active than they were in the past but, according to research, that’s really not true.
